Thiruvalla Temple

Thiruvalla temple in Kerala is situated at Alappuzha and is one of the significant temples and is a perfect sample of traditional style architecture. The temple is totally dedicated to Lord Vishnu and has numerous shrines.

This temple is constructed on a large ground and the temple is embellished with murals and complicated rock carvings. An idol of garuda is fixed at the top of the flag post which is made of granite.

This granite flag post is 50 feet tall and on it is the three feet idol of Garuda. The eagle is the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. This was constructed in the pre-Christian age. The graceful, long corridors made in granite slabs are evidence to the delicate and immaculate architectural poise of that era.

The main chamber in the shrine is devoted to Lord Vishnu and thereby the temple is known as Sree Vallabha Temple. This temple premises is huge enough and accommodates five more deities in lesser shrines within the temple area.

There is a ritual pursued since many decades that after every evening puja to the Lord a kathakali concert is conducted at the courtyard of the temple. The lord is estimated to enjoy this concert from his heavenly abode called Vaikuntha. A huge tank is constructed adjacent to the temple. It is believed that the flag post is at a depth that it touches the surface of the ground.

The Thiruvalla temple does not entertain women to enter the temple sanctorum and only on prime festive days such as Thiruvathirai and Vishu it is observed as an exception.

Thiruvalla temple celebrates two great festivals in a year, in February- March and in March- April.

These festivals are done with great pomp and enthusiasm. The cultural programs such as song or dance also mark such events.

Trade for granite items takes place during fairs and festivals. Devotees take active participation in the events to be conducted within the temple premises and do not spare any pains in making these events a grand success.

The Thiruvalla temple is merely at a short distance of 3 km from Thiruvalla Railway station and the adjacent airport is the Cochin Airport. The road links are excellent and connects to various other places in all the states. Taking the route of waterways and leading to Alappuzha port or thereby going ahead by road is also possible.

Thus reaching or accessing to and through Thiruvalla temple is easy. Moreover, the Thiruvalla temple is a significant shrine for the Vaishnavites and so many songs that are based as well as sung by the Alwars is heard generally.
