Thirunelli Temple

The Thirunelli temple is believed to be centuries old. It is in the Wayanad district in North Kerala. Legend of this temple showcases that this temple was devoted to Lord Vishnu and was constructed by Lord Brahma.

It is a real marvel to watch such magnificent architecture that have brought together 30 granite pieces to support the shrine and the floor is beautifully paved with immense square granite blocks.

This temple is also referred to as the ‘Kashi of South’. Thirunelli temple is enveloped by the rippling and bubbling river Papanasini and tucked in the Brahmagiri hills is a temple of high esteem.

Thirunelli temple has been embellished with rare paintings. The holy spring of the mountains, Papanasini is supposed to possess divine purification powers to forgive and cleanse the soul from its sins. Another attraction of this temple is a sacred rock where offerings are done on the New Moon day for ancestors.

Besides this ritual, a two day festival is conducted at this temple and during this festival art forms such as Ottanthullal and Kathakali are performed. This two day festival is done with great pomp and grandeur. The Thirunelli temple set on the Brahmagiri valley is a place of absolute peace and tranquil. Similarly, the Papanasini mountain spring has therapeutic effects and is effective on the human system. This temple bounces to life during festivals conducted in its sanctum.

Festivals such as Sivarathri, Chuttuvilakku, Navarathri, Puthari and Sreekrishnajayanti are celebrated with great pomp. Devotees flock from far and wide to visit this temple and pay their worship.

This is a very famous South Indian pilgrimage center. The railway station that is adjacent to Thirunelli temple is Kozhikode and this station is nearly 72 km from Kalpetta. Besides this, Karipur International airport at Kozhikode is also easy to access. This airport is 23 kms from Kozhikode town.
