Idukki Hill Station

Idukki hills are the enticing hill tours in South India. It is sited on the Western Ghats in Kerala.

The Idukki hills are shrouded with lush greens forming an apt combination against the hill rivers and crystal clear blue sky.

This hill station is near Kozhikode and is at a height of 750 meters above sea level. Idukki has acquired its name from Malayalam word Idukku which means narrow ravine.

Three main rivers flow through this region Periyar, Thodupuzhayar, and Thalayar. Idukki is not very cozy as it is surrounded by the majestic 14 peaks exceeding 2000 meters height.

Idukki is overwhelmed by majestic peaks, but its mysterious dark forests look dark green and are spectacular with beautiful landscape. The peaceful lakes, the pageant of striking colors at sunset, the whispers in the jungles are indeed an unraveled whodunit.Idukki is picturesque as it lies amidst the wooded trails and bestows with relaxing hideaways for the visitors to spend some quality time with nature.

Traversing on elephant backs, trekking trails, mountaineering, paragliding, rappelling and biking are some of the attractions for the visitors or tourists to visit Idukki. Though, the area looks rugged and mountainous, its bewitching and enticing charm has no variations and gives the best of the pleasure.

The appropriate time for going to Idukki hills is during September to May. The Idukki Arch Dam sited between the Kuravan and Kuravathi hills is the biggest arch dam of Asia and this reservoir is a popular picnic spot because of its magnificent views.

Similarly, the Kulamavu Dam, the Malankara Dam and the Cheruthoni Barrage are places of tourist interest. Idukki has a wonderful wildlife sanctuary above the arch Dam where you can watch elephants, reptiles, tigers, panthers, bison, langurs, the laughing thrush, the myna, jungle fowls and assorted birds in their natural habitats and feel the charisma of nature.

One of the main attractions is the Kuthumkal Waterfalls and the Keezar Kuthu is a waterfall attracting the film industry.

Idukki has expansive coffee, tea, rubber and spice plantations. Medicinal herbs grow in abundance in the Eravikulam Rajamala wildlife sanctuary in Idukki. Hill stations such as Munnar, Ponmudi and Devikulam are at the closest proximity.

The shrines include Annamalai Temple, Bhagawathy Temple, Mylacombu, Sri Krishnaswamy Temple, Uravappara Temple, Nainar Masjid and St. Thomas Church. Idukki can be reached from any part of Kerala state. Ernakulam station is the nearest junction and buses ply at frequent intervals. Recently, the tourists have increased in multitudes, yet this beautiful district is not robbed of its epitome.
