Festivals are an opportunity to clean and beautify the houses, to have get together with relatives and friends, to enjoy the excitement and fun and exchange gifts and sweets. New attire, music, dance and old rituals blended with new accomplishment add more joy and rhythm. Some of the important festivals in Kerala mark the significance of its esteem popularity.

Onam is the most significant festivals and is a 10 day festival in the honor of King Mahabali. He was a mythological king who reckoned the golden age in history.

He incarnated goodness, virtues and his administration marked equality as well as concord among people. Thrissur Pooram is another spectacular festival of this state. This festival was initiated by Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Kochi state.

This festival hosts the Kerala culture and attracts multitude of devotees and audience. Aranmula Uthirittathi is a boat carnival held every year on the Pampa. This is linked to the Onam festival and is celebrated as a commemoration of crossing the river by Lord Sri Krishna.

They strongly believe that the deity personally visits all the boats. Easter is a Christian festival and being the resurrection of Jesus it is observed with sincerity. Similarly, during the Thiruvathira festival the devotees rush to Shiva temples to worship early. Idul-Fitr is observed strictly by giving up food till evening and using much time for prayer. The Sabarimala Makaravillaku attracts people from far and wide.

Vishu is the new year of Malayalam speaking people and they celebrate it with cracker bursting, wearing new clothes and visiting temple. The Cochin Carnival is held in the last week of a year by observing a fast. Muharram is honored; Nehru Trophy Boat Race is encouraged, Malabar Mahotsavam is highlighted for its heritage and many more events take place constantly in Kerala. Besides being a scenic place, the Kerala festivals make it a pompous place.
