Varkala Beach

Beaches have always attracted tourists as they offer a retreat to nature boundless beauty. Beaches may be all around the world but only some beaches are frequented by tourists as they provide several facilities.

The state of Kerala is known all over the world for its beaches. Kerala has a long coast and is blessed with numerous beaches. The Varkala beach is one of the prominent beaches in Kerala.

It is not only a place to pass some time and relax oneself but is also slightly religiously as the native Hindus consider the place holy. Any person who bathes in the waters of this shores, he is believed to be forgiven for all his committed sins.

The Varkala beach is situated at a distance of more than 50 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. It is prominent as a tourist spot due to its easy accessibility and also its pleasant climate. The temple of Janardana Swamy is also located nearby.

This temple is believed to be 2,000 years old. This is an old temple devoted to Lord Vishnu. This temple attracts lots of pilgrims as well as tourists. This beach is comparatively crowded to a greater extent during the month of October as south India becomes heated during the summer.

The mineral springs and the excellent massages of the Varkala beach are prominent. The mineral springs are supposed to possess medicinal properties. The enigma of the massage has been guarded for thousands of ages.

Besides being a spot for relaxation of the mind, body heart and the soul, the Varkala beaches is also an important Hindu pilgrimage center. The Janardana temple in the vicinity is a prominent Hindu temple. The shore is called ‘Papanashini’ as there is a belief that a dip in the waters redeems a person of his sins.

At the dawn that succeeds the new moon during the Malayalam month ‘Karkikadam’, a ritual named ‘Vavu Bali’ is performed by the people to help their ancestors’ souls rest in peace.
