Nursing College in Kerala

Nursing is a very kind profession in which the nurse take cares of individuals to get their health back. It requires knowledge of various medical aspects as well as patience to treat the patients. Practice of nursing has a very broad range starting from hospitals to homes and from birth to death of individuals.

It is natural that nurses have very big role to play for the health of citizens that’s why Indian Nursing Council was established. By Indian Nursing Act 1947, various rights related to nursing were given to the council.

The council is responsible for giving approval to nursing colleges and to maintain uniform standard of education of nursing through out the country. Nursing colleges of Kerala are given approval by Kerala Nurses and Midwifes Council which works under INC.

There are numerous private as well as government run nursing colleges in Kerala to train girls for jobs in hospitals, nursing homes and various other organizations. Some renowned nursing colleges of Kerala are as follows:

  1. Government College of Nursing, Thiruvananthapuram

It was established in 1943 as subsidiary of General Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. In 1954, nursing school was shifted to Government Medical College Thiruvananthapuram.

School of nursing was upgraded to Government College of Nursing in 1963 with start of post basic diploma course for nurses. Four year B.Sc. (Nursing) program was started for 25 students in 1972. M.Sc. (Nursing) program of two years was initiated in year 1987.

Year 1999 was historic for the college when it started Global Health Exchange Program of Nursing with Karolinska Institute of Sweden.

Now there is faculty exchange program as well as student exchange program with foreign institutes of nursing as permanent part of curriculum. Now the college is a Ph. D. study centre as a part of National Consortium with WHO and with recognition of Indian Nursing Council.

There are various programs run by the college. There is a three and a half year course of General Nursing and Midwifery for 30 students. B.Sc. (Nursing) is a five year course with internship and it is offered to 60 students. Two year program of M. Sc. (Nursing) is running in four disciplines for 60 students now. Government College of Nursing, Kottayam The college runs B.Sc. (Nursing) for 50 students and it is famous for its learned faculties and laboratories.

There are 31 seats for General Nursing and Midwifery course. The Government college of Nursing also offers M.Sc. (Nursing) for 22 students in five disciplines. There is a long list of colleges of Nursing in Kerala which provide quality education to students to train for the help of society.
